On Thursday, CJI N V Ramana recommended to the government the appointment of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as his successor. CJI Ramana will retire on August 26, after which Justice Lalit would become the 49th Chief Justice of India. He has a limited term and will be in office until November 8, 2022.
According to Supreme Court sources, the CJI “personally handed over a copy of his letter of recommendation dated 03.08.2022 “to Justice Lalit on Thursday.
The current CJI, according to convention, suggests the name of his successor only after receiving a notification from the Law Ministry. requesting him/her to do so.
Who is Justice U U Lalit
According to The Indian Express, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is the second most senior judge of Supreme Court. In June 1983, he became an advocate and practised at the Bombay High Court till December 1985, then moved to Delhi in January 1986.
In April 2004, the Supreme Court appointed him as Senior Advocate. Under SC directions, he was appointed Special Public Prosecutor for the CBI to conduct trials in all 2G issues. For two terms, Justice Lalit served on the Supreme Court of India’s Legal Services Committee.
As a lawyer, Justice Lalit was particularly well-known for his criminal law practise, having handled numerous high-profile criminal cases. The Supreme Court designated him as a Special Public Prosecutor in the 2G fraud case in 2011. He was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India after being instantly raised from the Bar in 2014.
