Over 87,000 Indians renounced Citizenship till June 2023

On Friday, External affairs minister (EAM) S Jayashankar stated to the Lok Sabha that as many as 87026 Indians have renounced their citizenship as of June of this year.

Furthermore, he stated over 17.50 lakh people have given up their Indian citizenship since 2011. The EAM told the Lok Sabha that 2,25,620 Indians gave up their citizenship in 2022.

In the last two decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of Indian nationals exploring global employment opportunities. Many of them have chosen to obtain foreign citizenship for personal reasons, the minister stated.

Indians who renounced Citizenship (2011-Now):

  • In 2011- 1,22,819 citizens
  • In 2012- 1,20,923 citizens
  • In 2013- 1,31,405 citizens
  • In 2014- 1,29,328 citizens
  • In 2015- 1,31,489 citizens
  • In 2016- 1,41,603 citizens
  • In 2017- 1,33,409 citizens
  • In 2018- 1,34,561 citizens
  • In 2019- 1,44,017 citizens
  • In 2020- 85,256 citizens
  • In 2021- 1,63,370 citizens
  • In 2022- 2,25,620 citizens

Reasons for Citizen Renouncement:

Citizenship renunciation can happen for various reasons. Some of the common reasons for individuals of any nationality to renounce citizenship include:

  • Dual Citizenship
  • Job & Carrer Opportunities
  • Personal & Family Reasons
  • Taxation and Financial Reasons
  • Emigration and Permanent Residency etc…

Renunciation of Indian Citizenship:

The number of Indians who renounced their Indian citizenship was 85,256 (in 2020); 1,63,370 (in 2021); 2,25,620 (in 2022), and 87,026 (till June 2023), tables MEA in #LokSabha in response to a question, Tawqeer Hussain tweeted.
