Central Vista Update: The Delhi High Court dismissed a petition today against the Central Vista redevelopment project. Moreover, the High Court fined the petitioner Rs.1 lakh. It claimed the petition to be a ‘motivated’ one.

The High Court emphasized that there is ‘No question of suspending the construction work amid the coronavirus pandemic, as the laborers are staying at the site”

However, the ongoing redevelopment project drew lots of criticism as India battles a deadly second wave of COVID-19. Lakhs of people get infected everyday and thousands of people die each day.

The court stressed that the contract given to Shapoorji Pallonji Group, should be completed on time. Furthermore it said “the contractors should be allowed to continue the work as the deadline for the project is November”

According to PTI, the legality of the project was already upheld by the Supreme court.  The bench consisting of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh heard the petition.

Earlier in the beginning of this month, the Centre told the Delhi High court that this petition was “sheer abuse of the process of law”. They said that it is another attempt to block the project. A request made by the Centre to reject the petition and fine the petitioner too.

Anya Malhothra and Sohail Hashmi are the petitioners. They requested the Court to pause the Central Vista project for a while. Since, hundreds of workers are being exposed to Corona virus.

The Delhi High Court gave its verdict after 16 days. Earlier, the court reserved the judgment on the issue on May 17.However, on 31 May, the court gave a green signal for the construction of the Central Vista Project to continue.
