Demolition of many iconic landmarks and government buildings is being done. Meanwhile, the total cost of the construction of a new Parliament is Rs.20,000 crore.

The plan is to construct a new Parliament, Prime Minister and Vice-President’s residences. It will also have 10 building blocks that will accommodate all government ministries and departments.

Estimated Cost of Central Vista Project?

The estimated cost of Central Vista Redevelopment project is Rs.20,000 crores. The construction of the new Parliament building itself is Rs.1000 crores

What is the deadline of this Project?

The project is estimated to be completed by 2024.

Why do we need a Parliament?

The existing Parliament building was built by the Britishers, 93 years ago. The quality of amenities is very low. Moreover there are structural safety concerns.

Earlier, North and South Blocks were according to the location in north and south of the Rashtrapathi Bhavna. Whereas, in the Central Vista project, the residence of the Prime Minister is being shifted near the south block.

The new house of the Vice-President will be closer to the South block. According to the redevelopment plan, the North and the South blocks will be converted into museums.

Criticism of the redevelopment project

The Narendra Modi led-BJP government allocated Rs.20,000 Crore towards the redevelopment project. Very soon, the Covid-19 pandemic spread its pangs across the country.

However, there is strong opposition from many sides. The request is to divert this amount for the people of the country to overcome the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the conservationists are keen that the redevelopment will intervene with the history of the current building.
