Cab driver’s daughter wins a gold medal in Khelo India Youth Games on January 12 was claimed by Pooja Basumatary, a teenager who hails from Assam in Girls’ Under-17 57 kg category.

Pooja hails from Karbi Anglong district and represented India at Commonwealth Judo Championship in London in September last year and wins Gold Medal in it.

Pooja chose judo over wrestling as a kid, and then there was no looking back for her. Her father is a cab driver and her brother is a national level wrestler. His brother is her inspiration from the day she saw him participate at a local competition.

Pooja started her professional competitions from 2018. In just one and a half years, she emerged as one of the most promising judokas in the country. Arjuna Awardee Yashpal Solanki is training Pooja now. He likes to see her enter into the judo arena which he says is not less than watching your favorite movie.

Mr. Solanki expects her to become number one in the senior category in India by the end of this year. Pooja possesses excellent caliber and is one of the finest judo athletes in the country.
