Gotabaya Rajapaksa declares Emergency in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is surrounded by economic crisis and Anti-Government protests. On Friday, the President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared a state of emergency in Sri Lanka.  It will be  effective from Friday night. Moreover, the security forces were given sweeping powers.

Presidential Media

According to the Presidential media, Rajapaksa is trying to ensure public security. In fact, his aim is to maintain flow of fundamental services. He hopes this will help functioning of the country without obstacles.

Actual situation in the Country

The situation in the country is depleting every day. Earlier, we have seen a bumpy functioning of the country. Moreover, it is facing a serious issue of economic crisis. In addition to that, the availability of daily necessities is almost impossible.

The Law and order situation has worsened. The President declared that they cannot repay their debts borrowed from other countries.

Protests against Government

Since a month, the people of the country started protesting against the government. The people of the country are demanding the resignations of the Prime Minister and the President. Mahindra Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa respectively.

All the unions in the country united themselves to fight against the present government. They believe that  the incoherent decisions taken by Rajapaksa led the country to this situation.

The essential commodities, fuel prices and even price of milk powder are not affordable. There is an acute shortage of food and pharmaceuticals. People in Sri Lanka are also suffering from blackouts.

Furthermore, the public anger has sparked protests. Police have used tear gas and water cannons on students. They tried to barge into the Parliament. This is the worst period faced by Sri Lanka since its independence in1948.

Amidst the protests, this is the second time Sri Lanka has declared state of emergency in five weeks time.

Despite of protests Rajapaksa insisted that he will never step down. Due to the protests, he is forced to work from home.

Effect on Indian Government

This economic crisis in the neighboring country is very challenging issue to the Indian government. Subsequently, the public anger in Sri Lanka has led to humanitarian crisis. This in turn would lead to pouring in of refugees into our country through seamless borders.
