Is Ganga Water Safe for a Holy Dip? Latest Reports from Maha Kumbh 2025

The purity of the Ganga River’s water, especially during and after large gatherings like the Maha Kumbh Mela, has been a subject of concern. Recent reports indicate that despite efforts to maintain water quality, challenges persist.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), on January 14, 2025, the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) level at the Prayagraj Sangam was measured at 4 mg/l, exceeding the acceptable limit of 3 mg/l. A higher BOD indicates a greater concentration of organic matter, signifying poorer water quality.

In contrast, other reports suggest that the water level in the Ganga was around 76.53 meters on January 13, 2025, which is higher than previous years, and the BOD level was recorded at 2.8 mg/l on November 5, 2024, within acceptable limits.

Given these varying reports, it is evident that while efforts are being made to maintain the Ganga’s water quality during significant events like the Maha Kumbh Mela, challenges remain. Continuous monitoring and effective sewage management are crucial to ensure the river’s purity.
