ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by Open AI, is trending all over the internet and pooling the audience worldwide with its unique services. A judge from Colombia raised controversy for using ChatGPT to make a court decision. Recently the news is becoming viral all over the media regarding the ChatGPT. It is the first that a decision has been made using Artificial Intelligence.

According to a court document dated January 30, 2023, Judge Juan Manuel Padilla Garcia accepted that he has used an Artificial Intelligence tool to make a decision about the case. He concluded that the child’s medical plan should be liable for covering the expenditures because his parents were unable to pay them.

Furthermore, Mr Padilla said, ‘Using this artificial intelligence not only reduces the overburden on the court system but also improves effectiveness’. He also added that the aim of using this AI is not to replace the judge, but it can be helpful to ‘facilitate the drafting of texts’.

What did Judge Mr Padilla ask ChatGPT?

“Is an autistic minor exonerated from paying fees for their therapies?”. In reply, AI-generated a text saying, “Yes, it’s correct. According to the regulations in Colombia, minors diagnosed with autism are exempt from paying the fees for the therapies”.

Considering the action taken by Mr Padilla, the ChatGPT states, according to Colombia Law 2212 of 2022 it states that virtual tools can be used in court on specific instances.

Many of his colleagues criticised Mr Padilla for using Artificial Intelligence to pass or make a decision in this case.
