The flash floods in Libya, have killed over 5,000 people and 10,000 people are missing in the eastern city of Derna till now.

According to City officials, at least 10,000 people are missing. However, the United Nations aid agency estimates a potentially lower figure of at least 5,000. Before the disaster, the port city had a population of around 100,000 people, according to news outlets.

The Weather Channel Meteorologist Explains. More than 16 inches of rain lashed Northern Libya in just six hours on Sunday. Two dams were damaged and sent a massive amount of water into the city of Derna.

The collapse of two dams in Derna occurred after they caved in, under the pressure of water gathered behind them during the storm leading to thousands of deaths in the port city alone.

The death toll in the city could ultimately exceed 20,000, the City officials said. Based on estimates of those living in areas that were swept away and previous estimates from aid agencies. The government officials put the number of deaths at more than 5,000, with 10,000 people still missing.

Hundreds of bodies are still believed to be trapped under the rubble or washed into the Mediterranean Sea, said Othman Abduljaleel, the health minister of Eastern Libya.
