Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to win a Gold medal in the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest. In the men’s javelin final he created history with a high throw of 88.17 meters.
Pakistan’s Nadeem with the throw of 87.82 on his third attempt to win the silver medal. while the Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch took the bronze with 86.67.
The three Indians finished in the top eight with Kishore Jena throwing a javelin of 84.77m, and DP Manu throwing a javelin of 84.14m taking the 5th and 6th spots respectively. Never before did three Indians finish in the top eight of an event in the World Championships.
The 25-year-old Chopra has won gold medals in the Olympics (Tokyo in 2021), Asian Games (2018), and Commonwealth Games (2018), besides becoming the Diamond League champion last year. He won a silver in the 2022 World Championships in USA. He is the first Asian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in men’s javelin throw.
