Russian space agency Roscosmos has officially confirmed that the Luna-25 spacecraft Moon lander has crashed into the Moon. It was Russia’s first Moon landing mission in 47 years after Luna-24 was sent back in 1976 to the Moon.
An “abnormal situation” occurred at Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft. When it was preparing to transfer to its pre-landing orbit, Russia’s national space agency Roskosmos said.
The Luna 25 mission lifted off on 10 August 2023, 23:10 UTC, atop a Soyuz-2.1b rocket from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia’s far eastern Amur Region. On 19 August 2023 at 11:57 UTC, the lander collided with the Moon after an erroneously executed orbital maneuver.
The Luna-25 mission cost an estimated $200 million, which covered a wide range of expenses, including building the spacecraft, developing launch operations, mission control, and scientific analysis of data returned from the moon.
Russia’s Luna-25 crashes into Moon, and Chandrayaan-3 is now very near to landing on the moon from the South Pole. Chandrayaan-3 is set to land on the moon on August 23, 2023, around 18:04 Hrs. IST, says ISRO.
