July 19, On the eve of Balamani Amma birthday, Google celebrates her 113th birth anniversary with a special doodle dedicated to her. According to The New Indian Express, here are some interesting details you should know about her.

Who Is Balamani Amma?

Nalapat Balamani Amma, an Indian poet famous for her writings in Malayalam. She was born on July 19, 1909. She married V.M. Nair, the Managing Director and Editor of Mathrubhumi newspaper, when she was 19 years old.
At the age of 21 she published her first poem Kooppukai. More than 20 anthologies of poems were published by her. Her work also includes translations. She won awards like Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Akademi Award, Saraswati Samman for her writings.

Daughter

Kamala Surayya the daughter of Balamani Amma translated her mother’s poem “The Pen” which describes the loneliness of a mother.

Poems

Her poems describe women as a powerful character and beauty in motherhood. It also emphasizes mother’s affection and the struggles she faces at home and in society.

Inspiration for many poets

Through her writings she inspired generations of poets from Malayalam. Some of her famous writings are Amma, Muthassi and Mazuhuvinte Katha.
