The return of Coronavirus: Another lock-down in Maharashtra?

85.6% of new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Experts say that COVID-19 surge is due to gram panchayat polls and disregard for rules.

There has been a substantial rise in coronavirus cases in Maharashtra. The state recorded 14,317 fresh infection cases yesterday, which is not only the highest so far in 2021, but also since October 7, 2020. The overall case count till yesterday night was 22,66,374.

The authorities attribute this surge due to crowding witnessed during the gram panchayat elections held mid-January this year as one factor and widespread disregard for the COVID rules by people as well as politicians is another one.

However, the exact cause of the surge is unknown. The government feels that Covid in-appropriate behaviour can be blamed for it. The number of cases of coronavirus infection continues to rise as India recorded 23,285 cases, the highest in around 78 days, in a single day on Thursday.

The matter of concern is that the recovery rate has dropped to 96.86 per cent, because of which lock downs are making a comeback.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray of Maharashtra has already announced lock-down in Nagpur City and has called for a stricter lock down to be enforced to contain the spread of COVID-19. Unfortunately, few more states like Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Gujarat, apart from Maharashtra continue to be in the frip of fresh coronavirus cases.

According to the Union Health Ministry data, at least eight states are showing an upward rise as far as fresh cases are concerned.

The only silver lining is that there are no traces of new strains in the fresh coronavirus cases, particularly in Maharashtra.

Why COVID-19 Cases Rising?

The exact cause of the surge is unknown yet but the blame should be on the inappropriate behaviour of the people. Certainly, it is the lack of fear for the coronavirus and the irresponsible behaviour which is leading to a sudden spurt in the number of coronavirus infections in Maharashtra.

The surge in the number of cases in many other other states is not very surprising as there are no travel restrictions in place. People are irresponsibly traveling from one state to another.

No screening is being done for passengers who hail from other states, which should have been mandatory. But the negligence from the authorities and the passengers coming from other states could be the cause of the surge directly related to Maharashtra.

Measures should be taken and see that the COVID rules are followed strictly. Tamil Nadu has recently introduced e-pass mandatory for overseas and domestic passengers. People traveling from other states, except Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and the neighbouring Puducherry, will be allowed entry in the southern state only if they will have an e-pass.

While so far Maharashtra has been a cause of concern, similar sudden spikes can be found in Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.
