Honorable PM Mr. Narendra Modi has been delivering his speeches in Hindi during his foreign tours, which has become a debatable topic recently. Most of them have applauded him for his decision to talk in Hindi. However, many are surprised about the Prime Minister’s decision to speak in Hindi in the International arena.
Ironically, Hindi is not the National language of India. Added to that, most people can speak and understand their regional language. Only 10% of people understand Hindi Internationally.
On the contrary, he is the first Indian Prime Minister to speak in Hindi during his foreign tours. All the Prime Ministers had spoken in English as they were exceptionally fluent in English and the pronunciation was excellent. People in foreign countries could understand their accents, but it is vice-versa in the case of the present Indian PM. A few reasons can be as follows:
Firstly, Mr. Modi is a fair speaker of Hindi, even though his mother- tongue is Gujarati. He can analyze his audiences and can cater to their expectations even without a scripted speech or a teleprompter.
Secondly, Modi is not a native English speaker and his command of the language is not that good, but he can’t formulate eloquent thoughts on the spot in Hindi.
However, people supporting the Prime Minister’s decision to speak in Hindi applaud him. They feel that he wanted to create a special place for Hindi in the UN and is also trying to make it an official language there.
Many others feel that Namo has taken the first stride to make India proud by aping the other world leaders who speak in their native language and use translators.
