At least 40 people have killed and many others have gone missing in flash floods in northern India caused by heavy monsoon rains over the last three days. The information spread quickly throughout the media and shocked the internet. The India Meteorological Department forecasted severe to very heavy rain in the region for the next two days.
According to ABC News, in some regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the rains drowned hundreds of villages, washed away mud houses, flooded roads, and wrecked bridges. In both states, rescue teams were evacuating the stranded.
Landslides and floods are typical during the June-September monsoon season in India’s Himalayan north. Scientists believe that as mountains here melt because of global warming, landslides and floods are occurring more often.
Last year, severe floods in Uttarakhand killed around 200 people and wiped away homes,
