Who is Amritpal Singh? Why he raised Controversy? Know the details

In February 2023, a case was registered against Amritpal Singh & six of his associates at  Ajnala police station for allegedly kidnapping and thrashing Varinder Singh. The police arrested one of Singh's close associates, Lovepreet Singh Toofan.

Amritpal Singh recently returned from Dubai to India. He recently became a head of Waris Punjab De, an organisation founded by Deep Sidhu, an actor and activist. Last year February, he died in a road accident.

About Amritpal Singh

Amritpal Singh born in 1993, is a radical self-styled Indian Khalistani separatist activist from Punjab, India. After the sudden death of Deep Sidhu, a letter was published by Waris Panjab De on 4 March 2022 declaring Amritpal Singh as the organisation’s leader when he returned to Punjab from Dubai.

Amritpal Singh was made the head of the organisation that Sidhu had formed to “protect the rights of Punjab & raise social issues”. He appointment as head of Waris Punjab De was controversial because the ceremony took place in the ancestral village of Bhindranwale. He dressed like the militant leader presents himself similar to Bhindranwale, who was killed in Operation Blue Star in 1984.

Amritpal has been conducting several marches like ‘Panthik Vaheer’ which started from Akal Takhat Sahib, Amritsar.  promote Sikhism in the state & has been giving provocative speeches on various controversies. He & his supporter held another large Amrit Parchaar campaign in Amritsar where 1,027 Sikhs & Hindus from across India took Amrit to became Khalsa Sikhs.

Amritpal one of his speech said that “Jesus who could not save himself, how he will save everyone else?”. Which was termed hate speech by members of the Christian community. The Christian community staged a four hours long protest against Amritpal at PAP Chowk for his remarks about Jesus Christ. They demanded FIR against him for hurting religious sentiments.

According to source, the president of the Shiv Sena (Thackeray), Punjab youth wing held a press conference & urged the state government to arrest Amritpal for his “seditious activities”. He accused Singh of styling himself like Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale & surrounding himself with armed men.

Singh’s both  Sikh groups pointed to a trend of social media banning of Sikh activists by social media.

Why he is in Limelight?

According to news reports, On Thursday, a group supporters from Waris Punjab De, some of them brandishing swords & guns, broke through barricades & stormed the Ajnala police station. Demanding that Lovepreet Singh alias Toofan to release.
