In 2013, a scam was unearthed which shocked the whole nation – The Vyapam Scam. It was an entrance examination, admission and recruitment scam. The scam was functional since 1990 and finally gave away after 23 years in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

What is VyaPaM?

Vyavasayik Pariksha Mandal acronym VyaPaM is a self financed, autonomous body regulated by government of Madhya Pradesh. Vyapam is responsible for conducting entrance tests in the state. The entrance tests are conducted by Vyapam for recruitments of Government jobs and admissions in educational institutions.

Who are involved in Vyapam Scam?

Politicians, senior and junior officials, businessmen were actors in the scam. They drafted and implemented very systematic plan. Many imposters were employed on bribing the officials to manipulate seating arrangements in the examination hall, supply forged answer sheets and to write papers.

When is Vyapam Scam unsheathed?

Many complaints were being received from mid 1990. But the first FIR was filed in 2000. However, not many active cases were noted later. In 2009, major complaints were surfaced in Pre Medical Test.

A committee was established by government to investigate the matter. After a thorough investigation of 2 years a report is released. In spite of 100 arrests no one was convicted. Dramatically, most of the accused died in the custody and others were released on bail.

The Whistleblower

The whistleblower of the scam was Dr Anand Rai opinionated that Vyapam scam was functional since 1990’s when he took his medical entrance. He also believed similar scams are being done in other states of India as well.

Increase in Accused Number

In 2015 CBI has taken over the investigation following the Supreme Court orders. On February 13, 2017, the Supreme Court of India delivered a judgment by cancelling the degrees of 634 doctors.

However in February 2022, the CBI has filed charge sheet against 160 more of accused including former controller of Vyapam and two officials of State Directorate of Medical Education. The court is studying the case and asked the CBI to produce the accused in batches following the COVID norms. It is still undetermined how many more are going to join the accused.

Conclusion

Every country in the world experiences different scams. But scams in concern with education will be stepping stone for the down fall of the country. The students today are the pillars for a Great nation of tomorrow. If the future of these students is in dilemma due the scams than the development of the nation will be questionable.

The scam in Madhya Pradesh is revealed, but the condition in other states is still unknown. The government has to implement strict rules and stricter punishments to bring down the scams.
