Secondary status of women in India and gender difference

The secondary status of women in this country is so common that this gender difference is the reason for the alarming statistics of suicides amidst housewives.

A data released by the National Crime Record Bureau, says that housewives accounted for 17.1 percent of suicides in 2018. It’s pathetic to see the statistics because of the mental health crisis in housewives, suicides are twice the number of farmers in our country, but still, there are no conversations or discussions regarding this. Shall we think it’s is due to the secondary status given to women in our country?

What makes women so susceptible to suicides in our country? Is it the complete ignorance towards their mental well being by the society, or the pressure to endure their ordeal in silence, for the sake of peace at home?

India lost many housewives and is many every year. The dishonor around mental illness abstains from people to discuss issues like depression, anxiety and the loss of will to live. Opening up about your mental health struggles and seeking help is a different struggle altogether, which causes people to bear their ordeal in silence and loneliness.

We never like to accept the fact that people in our house can go through this. We always assume that it happens to others but not our own people and hence ignore the signs in our husbands, fathers, mothers, friends, or even ourselves. Even if it would happen to us , we would just think, why would it happen to us?
