A 65 year-old-man from Gujarat has been identified as first person with an unusual blood group namely EMM Negative Blood in India. This blood group cannot be categorized into existing four blood groups. Apparently, the antigens in the blood are low in EMM when compared to other groups.

According to India Today, India registered its first EMM Negative blood group. So far there are only 9 people in the world who belong to this group. Now the 65 year-old- man from Gujarat added up to the list.

Doctor Sanmukh Joshi Words

Sanmukh Joshi, doctor at Samarpan Blood Donation Centre, Surat, said that the 65 year old man was undergoing treatment after suffering from a heart attack. He was in need of blood for heart surgery. Moreover his blood group did not match with others in the laboratory. Hence, his blood samples were sent to Surat blood donation center for further examination.

Significantly, the blood group did not match with any of the existing groups. For detailed analysis and investigation the sample was sent to America. There it was observed that the person does not have EMM high-frequency antigen in his blood.

What is EMM Negative Blood group

There are four types of blood groups in the human body consisting of 42 types of systems, like A, B, O, Rh and Duffy. Moreover, there are 375 types of antigens in which EMM is high.

Due to the lack of EMM in the blood, the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) has named it EMM negative. People with these rarest blood groups can neither donate nor receive, which makes them different from normal humans.
