An employee of the Uttar Pradesh power department commits suicide. It is alleged that a senior official asked him to ‘send his wife for a night’ if he wanted a transfer.

The employee resorted to this drastic step as he was upset and humiliated. 45-year-old man Gokul Prasad doused himself in diesel outside the junior engineer’s office in Lakhimpur. He set himself on fire. However, he was rushed to a hospital nearby but died during the treatment on Sunday.

In a video shot after Gokul Prasad set himself on fire, he narrated his ordeal in it. He alleged that he took this extreme step as the junior engineer and his aide harassed him. Furthermore, he claimed that the police also did not help him when he approached them.

Consequently, Junior engineer Nagendra Kumar and a clerk have been suspended and a police case has been registered.

In another video, his wife alleged that the accused tortured Gokul for the past three years. “He went into depression, started taking medication, but they did not spare him. He was transferred to Aliganj and was facing difficulty in travelling. So he asked for a transfer closer home. They told him ‘get your wife to sleep with us and we will get you transferred”, she said.

According to NDTV, she also alleged that no one came forward to help him, but just stood there and watched .

However, Senior police officer said that there were complaints against the Junior engineer from the other linemen too. It is alleged that he used to demand money and make vulgar statements when he sought a transfer. “We have registered a case. An inquiry is ordered at the department level. The case has been registered under the abetment to suicide charge”
