Extended detention under National Security Act of UP’s doctor Kafeel Khan

Kafeel Khan a renowned physician, he was arrested in January. The cause for his imprisonment was, he delivered speech at Aligarh Muslim University on December 10, 2019.
The main accusation against Kafeel Khan was he delivered provocative speech during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests. Under the National Security Act his detention has extended by three months by The Uttar Pradesh government.

He was arrested on 29th January. It is mentioned Under the National Security Act (NSA) that people can be detained without a charge for up to 12 months if authorities are satisfied that they are a threat to the national security.

On 4th August, 2020, the UP Home Department said the NSA was conjured against Khan on February 13, 2020, on the orders of the Aligarh District Magistrate. Then the matter was sent to the advisory council. Then they found that there were several reasons to keep him in jail. As a result of on 6th May orders were given to extend his detention under the NSA by three months that is till August 13, 2020.

Governor Anandiben Patel extended the detention of Kafeel Khan further by three more months. As a result he will remain in jail till 13th November, 2020.
He was arrested under IPC section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion).

According to the FIR registered against him, his speech disrupts the harmony between the communities. He tried to promote enmity among different religion. Police said later, IPC sections 505(2) (statements promoting enmity, hatred or ill will between classes) and 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) were also added against him. The doctor is currently lodged in Mathura jail.

He was arrested in the year 2017, after the deaths of several kids due to lack of oxygen cylinders at Gorakhpur’s Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, where he worked as a pediatrician.
