Cyclone Nisarga is expected to make landfall near Alibaug in Raigad district of Maharashtra between 1 and 3pm today. As a precaution, authorities in Mumbai have imposed Section 144 CrPC in the city.
Authorities in Maharashtra and Gujarat are gearing up to evacuate people in the wake of Cyclone Nisarga. It has intensified into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ and is expected to make landfall in north Maharashtra today.
Cyclone Nisarga will make landfall at Alibag in Raigarh district of Maharashtra between 1 pm and 3 pm today, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Teams of the NDRF, state police and local authorities in Maharashtra and Gujarat are on the ground to assess the situation and evacuate people to safety.
According to the latest bulletin on Cyclone Nisarga issued by the IMD, as of 9.30 am, Cyclone Nisarga lay centred over the east-central Arabian Sea. It was 165 km south-southwest of Mumbai.
In Mumbai, flight operations have been affected and the local authorities have imposed Section 144 CrPc. “Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) issued in Greater Mumbai in view of cyclonic conditions in the city to ensure that there is no danger to human life, health or safety,” said Commissioner of Police, Greater Mumbai.
