Is using abusive language synonymous to Modernity?

Abusive language is being used frequently by everyone and it seems that it is nothing wrong these days. Be it anyone – a small child, an aged person (irrespective of gender), educated, illiterates, clerk or a bureaucrat.

I still remember the days when my grandmother used to punish us for using simple words like fool, or idiot, which I don’t get to see these days. Teachers used to punish us and use phrases as ‘wash your mouth’ so that we feel that there is something bad in our talk.

Who is at fault, the parents, teachers, media or the society?

Millennials and the Generation Z is not afraid of using abusive language at all.

OTT (Over The Talk) has become the craze of the day. The popularity has increased due to the COVID-19 lockdown and the rules of closing down the theatres and multiplexes. People started watching films at home. Subsequently, there is a rise in viewing Web series on OTT,. Though it is new to India, very soon it became a part of every house soon.

OTT has really impacted every household and it is really useful and the quality of the web series which are being telecasted are mind blowing. Sadly, the language used in them is very bad. These series are being watched by the whole family as they connect every person’s life and something new.

There is lot of abusive language being used and many scenes of crime and obscenity are shown without any censor. Surprisingly, Children are not exempted from seeing such things at home.

Undoubtedly, the performances are really great but the focus on quality of the language and vulgarity should be maintained. It can be suggested that if the same thing can be done using good and normal language then why to use such expletives and teach them to the next generation.

When I heard a small boy use abusive language, I curiously asked him the meaning of the words he used, for which he had no answer. The youngsters use this abusive language when they hear the others use it.

I am sure most of them do not even know the meanings of those words, else they would not utter them at all. Hence, the responsibility vests in the elders and parents to keep checking their children, especially set an example by not using such language before them and with them.

We teach our children not to adapt the western culture, but not sure of what exactly it is. So, it’s not the western or eastern culture which impact on the language OR behavior of our children, it’s we in-directly making them to be prone to the filthy language from our homes, the kind of content we watch on entertainment channels and the way we behave with others.
