During his Maan Ki Baat broadcast on Sunday, PM Narendra Modi said the Emergency was a dark era in Indian history when atrocities were committed on those supporting democracy.

According to news reports, PM Modi held his monthly broadcast radio ‘Maan Ki Baat’ on June 18. The broadcast is usually scheduled to be the last Sunday of the month, but he decided to do it earlier as he is leaving for the US next week.

“India is the mother of democracy.” We consider our democratic values as fundamental and our Constitution as supreme. As a result, we cannot forget June 25th. This is the day when our country declared a state of emergency. It was a dark era in Indian history. Lakhs of people strongly opposed the Emergency, PM Modi stated.

The State of Emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi in the year 1965.

Furthermore, he stated the supporters of democracy were tortured severely during that time. Today, while celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, we must also observe such atrocities. This will teach future generations the meaning and importance of democracy.

Modi also praised India’s increasing capacity to deal with disasters in his Mann Ki Baat radio programme, expressing confidence that the people of Kutch will rapidly recover from the destruction caused by Cyclone Biparjoy.

The prime minister stated that following the terrible earthquake two decades ago, people questioned if Kutch would be able to recover. However, he stated that the people of Kutch recovered from the disaster.

Modi also stated that India’s disaster management capabilities have improved in recent years and that the country is now setting an example.
