A golden sceptre called ‘Sengol’ would be installed at a prominent spot in the new Parliament building, said Union Minister Amit Shah. It will be inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi.

There is a massive protest by the opposition, which has demanded President Droupadi Murmu do the honours – at noon on Sunday.  The present leader of the Thiruvavaduthurai Aadheenam Sri La Sri Ambalavana Desika Paramacharya Swamigal stated the sceptre will be handed over to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28 as soon as word of the spectre’s location in new Parliament building leaked on Tuesday.

All you need to know about ‘Sengol’:

Sengol is derived from the Tamil word “Semmai”, meaning “Righteousness”. According to an official document — the sceptre is a “significant historical” symbol of Independence as it signifies the transfer of power from the British to the Indians, Shah told the media.

The focus has shifted to a Tamil Nadu mutt’s encounter with India’s destiny on the eve of August 15, 1947. The Sengol (spectre) given to India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, will be displayed in the new Parliament building at the dawn of Independence. The final-minute creation of the ring included assistance from a goldsmith in Chennai.

In reality, this incidence was addressed in a policy statement published by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department a few years ago. “The customary guru or preceptor of the King would present the ceremonial Sceptre to the new king at the time of enthronement. Following this custom, Thiruvavaduthurai Aadheenam Thambiran Swamigal gave Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru the gold-plated silver sceptre after the Oduvars finished singing the final line of the “11th stanza” from Kolaru Pathigam, Thevaram. It stated that this represented the handover of authority from Lord Mountbatten, the British Governor-General, to the first Prime Minister of India.

The Home Minister emphasised how little people knew about the sengol’s significance and history. Introducing the Sengol into the new legislature strives to unite modernism with traditional traditions. Amit Shah applauded Prime Minister Modi’s thoughtfulness in considering including the sengol in the new parliament and emphasised the significance of protecting and honouring India’s history.
