Manipur: On Wednesday, the state government issued a notice stating, the suspension of internet services across the state for 5 days amid the violence, ANI reports. Also, a curfew was imposed in eight districts of Manipur, due to violence during a tribal agitation.
A night curfew has been enforced in numerous parts of the state, in addition to a ban on big gatherings. According to ANI, the Army and Assam Rifles were sent to control the situation.
Meiteis:
The Meitei people, commonly known as the Manipuri people, are the major ethnic group of Manipur, Northeast India. The people living here speak Meitei, one of India’s 22 recognised languages and the sole official language of Manipur.
According to The Mint, The Meiteis, who account for 53% of the state’s population, live in the Valley, which covers around one-tenth of the former princely state’s land area. They allege they are experiencing difficulties as a result of “large-scale illegal immigration by Myanmarese and Bangladeshis.”
Manipur Violence:
Manipur Tribals organised a peaceful “Tribal Solidarity March” in various hill districts and towns against unconstitutional Meetei ST demand. Violence arose during the Tribal Solidarity March in Churachandpur, which was organised by ATSUM in response to the Meitei Schedule Tribe demand.
Thousands of tribals, who make up over 40% of the state’s population, marched in support of ST status for the Meitei, waving banners and shouting slogans. This leads to violence between tribals and non-tribals in the Torbung area. The police also fired several rounds of tear gas shells to control the situation.
