The Supreme Court (SC) quashed the present system of appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioner. It gave a ruling that a panel would be set up comprising of Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the leader of the opposition. This panel would make appoint them.
This historic verdict is taken so that there is no interference in its functioning and would be more independent. This verdict was taken unanimously by a five judge bench. They agreed upon the verdict.
Furthermore, the top bench also instructed that if there’s no leader of opposition, then the leader of the single largest party in the Lok Sabha will join to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioners.
