Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched a facility for instant allotment of Permanent Account Number or PAN on a near-to-real-time basis on Thursday. The move has come in line with the finance minister’s Budget announcement earlier this year.
Those who possess a valid Aadhaar number and have a mobile number registered with Aadhaar, the facility for instant PAN will be available, according to CBDT.
The government, had introduced interchangeability of PAN and Aadhaar in its last Budget. In her budget speech on February 1, the FM had proposed to launch a system under which PAN shall be instantly allotted online on the basis of Aadhaar without any requirement for filling up of detailed application form.
The facility will be available for those who possess a valid Aadhar number and have a mobile number registered with UIDAI issued unique identification number scheme, said the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
“The launch of the instant PAN facility is yet another step by the Income Tax Department towards Digital India, thereby creating further ease of compliance to the taxpayers, according to an official statement,” the government said in a statement on the scheme.
As on Monday, a total of 50.52 crore PANs have been allotted to the taxpayers of which about 49.39 crore are allotted to the individuals and more than 32.17 crore are seeded with Aadhaar so far.
