PM Modi and J&K Leaders Meet, Statehood at the Right Time

J&K statehood row: PM Modi met all the political leaders of Jammu & Kashmir on Thursday. Earlier, the state of Jammu and Kashmir was stripped off its status on August 5,2019. Very soon, the leaders were house arrested. They had to stay indoors or arrested for more than a year.

Meanwhile, this is the first time that PM Modi held such a meeting with the political leaders of J&K. It was a 3 hour long meeting with 14 mainstream political leaders of J&K, he assured that the statehood would be restored at the right time.

PM Modi said “ the main focus of the meeting was to strengthen the democratic process. We are fully committed to the democratic process in J&K. He stressed that holding elections just like the successful conduct of District Development Council elections is a priority.”

We have placed five demands before the government including holding early elections and restoring statehood to the state, said veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. He further said “most J&K leaders said a decision on Article 370 should be left to the Supreme Court”.

Four Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir – Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah , Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mehbooba Mufti participated in the discussions.

Four former deputy Chief Ministers – Tara Chand, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Nirmala Singh and Kavinder Gupta. The leaders who attended the meeting demanded for J&K’s statehood.

According to the reports of NDTV, it was decided that Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha would set up a committee to review cases of political prisoners.
