A young woman’s head was tonsured and her face was blackened by villagers in Gujarat’s Patan as punishment for eloping with her lover.

Villagers in the Harji area of Gujarat’s Patan blackened the face of a woman and tonsured her head as punishment for eloping with her lover.

The villagers belonged to the Vadi tribe felt that her act of eloping was against their rules.

Moreover, the woman can be seen crying and desperately pleading with the villagers to let her off in a viral video. None of them heard to her cries, instead, men continued rubbing ink on her face.

The villagers were upset that the woman eloped with her lover. They claimed that her act brought a bad name to the tribe and decided to punish her.

However, the district administration swung into action as soon as they received the information about the incident.

Patan Superintendent of Police Supreet Singh Gulati reached the spot and detained 15 people in connection with the matter.

So far, 17 people have been detained. Five people who were clearly visible in the video, are being questioned.
