In a tragic incident, at least 12 died, and 80 people were injured after a stampede at a stadium in Antananarivo, Madagascar. The images and videos from inside the stadium were shared on social media and shook the internet.
The stampede happened on Friday near the entrance to the Barea stadium, where a crowd of around 50,000 people had gathered to attend the opening ceremony of the Indian Ocean Island Games.
“The provisional toll is 12 dead and 80 injured,” Madagascar’s Prime Minister Christian Ntsay told reporters at an Antananarivo hospital.
According to news reports, the cause of the incident is still unknown, but the toll might rise, the Red Cross stated.
“There were many people at the entrance, which triggered a stampede,” Antsa Mirado, a Red Cross communications manager, told AFP.
