On Thursday, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) reportedly issued a notice to sports bodies and to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The notices were issued for allegedly not having an Internal Complaints Committee as per law to deal with complaints of sexual harassment.
According to the report by NHRC, it has issued notices to;
- Secretary, Department of Sports, Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports
- the Sports Authority of India (SAI)
- the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI)
- Wrestling Federation of India, and all the 15 other National Sports Federations.
Furthermore, it has requested that full reports should be submitted within 4 weeks, detailing the current state of the ICC in their organization. Also, the actions taken or aimed to be made to resolve the issue.
According to a media report on 4th May, 5 Federations, including the Wrestling Federation, do not even have an ICC. Four Federations do not have the required number of members, and six Federations do not have the required external members. Also, one Federation had two panels, neither of which had an independent member.
