The Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samiti organised a rally on Tank Bund on Tuesday. According to the Deccan Chronicle, many Ganesh Utsav committee members were arrested by the police on Tuesday, as they tried to take out a bike rally. The news of Ganesh Utsav committee members arrested went viral all over the media and internet.
The rally was organised to demand for conducting the immersion of Ganesh idols in Hussain Sagar Lake.
Earlier, the Telangana High Court gave permission that only clay idols will be allowed to be immersed in the city lakes, including Hussainsagar. However, the Supreme Court granted “last chance” to Telangana authorities last year. It granted permission for immersion of ‘Lord Ganesh Idols’, made of plaster of Paris in Hussain Sagar lake last year.
Subsequently, the Telangana government is following the High court orders. However, BGUS general Secretary Dr. Bhagvanth Rao said that the High Court judgment violated the constitutional right to freedom of religion.
Furthermore, he alleged that the High court gave such a judgment as it was given ‘misinformation’ by the Telangana government. He mentioned that the government gave a report that idols made of Plaster of Paris pollute the lake.
However, the Hyderabad city police said that they had not received any application seeking permission for the bike rally. “Since the Assembly session will be in progress, such mass gatherings are prohibited in the area. Holding such rallies is illegal. According to the City Police Act, for holding such events, permission is mandatory. Any violation will be treated as per the law. Further, due to the Assembly session in progress, prohibitory orders are already in effect within a four-km radius around the Assembly,” said a city police official.
