80% of the funds allotted to the much-hyped Central Government’s flagship scheme ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao‘ reportedly spent only on ads and campaigns.
Apparently, the government did not focus on the implementation the actual scheme genuinely. In fact we can say it was just an eye-wash kind of a scheme.
Report of the Parliamentary Committee
In it’s report, the parliamentary committee reported that out of the 446.72 crore released from 2016-2019. However, a whopping of 78.91 percent was used on ad campaigns on media.
The Parliamentary Committee submitted this report in the parliament and suggested the central government, that it’s time to start focusing on the real scheme at least now.
The Parliamentary Committee is headed by Heena Vijaykumar Gavit and the report is named ‘Empowerment of women through education’. It gave special reference to ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao‘, reports The Hindu.
‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’ launch
Earlier in 2015, PM Narendra Modi launched the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao‘ scheme. He said that the government aims to focus on issues like sex-selective abortion and the declining sex ratio in the country. However, it is reported that the program is currently operational in over 400 districts across India.
The Parliamentary Committee further reported that the total budget was utilized poorly. The total budget allocated to this scheme was Rs. 848 crore, right from its inception to 2020. However, this does not include the COVID year 2020-2021.
Furthermore, a total of Rs. 622.48 crore was distributed to the states. Out of which the states received only 25.13 percent of the total money to spend for the scheme.
