Bookie Sanjeev Chawla, a key accused in the 2000 match-fixing scandal along with South African Captain Hansie Cronje has been extradited to India from the UK. Chawla has been staying in the U.K since then and has taken British citizenship.
After two decades of persuasion and legal proceedings, the officers of the Delhi Police were successful in getting the bookie back. The order has been given by the British Home Minister Sajid Javid against Chawla.
Bookie Sanjeev Chawla landed in India, Delhi airport on Thursday morning, just an hour before the scheduled time of the flight.
Sanjeev Chawla has been brought back to India from the UK, to face match-fixing charges in India as he is the key accused in the match-fixing scandal in 2000. He allegedly played an important role to conspire with Hansie Cronje, and had fixed the South African tour to India in February -March 2000.
Sanjeev Chawla was arrested in 2016 and has lost his long legal battle. He had approached the human rights commission in London that Tihar jail was not suitable for him where he would be kept in October 2017.
The British High Court has requested the Government of India to follow the assurances given to the U.K court. He was extradited after the final legal paperwork was done at Heathrow Airport this week and then now is in the hands of the Delhi police.
Once he arrives, he has to undergo the required medical examinations and then will be taken to Tihar Jail and will be in the custody of the Indian government. The government has to follow the assurances given to the UK courts.
This is the first high-profile extradition of its kind under the India-UK Extradition Treaty, signed in 1992.
