Chennai: Neurosurgeon dies of Covid-19, mob attacks hearse, stop burial

A Neurosurgeon, Dr Simon Hercules dies of Covid-19. The locals in Chennai denied the burial of the doctor. The crowd hit people with sticks, pelted stones in fear that the burial of the corona infected doctor’s body will spread the virus.

It is such a contradictory incident when the nation and its leaders have repeatedly saluted the front line healthcare workers for their service during the coronavirus pandemic. One doctor in Tamil Nadu was robbed of dignity even in death.

According to medical authorities, he had likely contracted the infection while treating patients. The 55-year-old neurosurgeon, Dr Simon Hercules succumbed to Covid-19. He was on ventilator support.

He had developed health complications after he was tested positive. Neurosurgeon dies of Covid-19 died at a private hospital in Chennai on Sunday. He suffered a cardiac arrest and succumbed to it at 6:15 pm on Sunday at a private hospital.

The body was given to his family. Few doctors also joined the family to head to the Kilpauk cemetery to bury him there. However, the locals in the area had already received a message and were waiting there in protest. They were determined not to let the burial proceed in that area.

The ambulance carrying Dr Hercules headed to a cemetery in Anna Nagar. Family and friends accompanying the body including the ambulance driver were stopped by the protesters.

The mob there pelted stones at them and hit them with logs. The ambulance driver and sanitation worker were injured badly. The vehicle’s windshield was completely broken.

The family had to run to escape the mob. One of Dr. Hercules friends managed to recover the body and drove off to a different location.

Dr Hercules was later buried with police security. The family could not bid him goodbye. The body was buried with a friend and two people who helped them.
